Playing Through Dancing by My Own Rules

Reaching 40 and still a good girl, I finally created my own rules to follow

I’m a good girl, even as I reach my 40th birthday in less than a month. I’ve learned to be obedient and follow the rules as much as I can.

Whose rules? Well, mostly my parents’, my father-in-law’s, my husband’s, the government's, even my bossy kids’, and mine. My lifelong passion is in dance, but I didn’t dance as often as I wanted, because of my own unwritten rules:

  • I can only dance when I’m slim.
  • I can only dance in a dance class at a proper dance studio.
  • I can only dance with people around the same age as me.
  • I can’t dance without music.
  • I can’t dance with my kids around.
  • I can’t dance by myself in a park where people might stare at me.
  • I can only dance when the choreography is given.
  • No, I can’t pretend to be a young, hot, and sexy K-pop superstar!

It’s amazing how many rules I’ve broken, especially in this last couple of years, to nourish myself with the magic of dance.
